Keepers of the Light centres on the iconic lighthouse at Portland Bill and the location of its original production – Chance Glass Works in Smethwick.
The Scotlands estate in north Wolverhampton was developed as council housing during slum clearance programmes of the 1950’s and 1960’s. Artists from Laundry were commissioned to work with local groups using photography, film, audio recordings to challenge the ‘outside’ view of the Scotlands.
This archive shares what was going on in society, what was going on in the world and what was going on in a place like Sandwell, where industrialisation was being wiped out and we were moving into a new territory.
A partnership with the Borderland Foundation (Poland) and the New Culture Foundation (Bulgaria). The work was structured around creative laboratories and exchanges using artistic practice in diverse multicultural communities.
A two-year training programmed with the Institute of Polish Culture at Warsaw University, the Art Institute at Vytautus Magnus University in Kaunas and two arts associations, Katedra Kultury in Warsaw and Spolek Richelieu in Prague.
